I'm one of the few people on planet Earth who is yet to have a website - I'm ashamed to admit. I'm interested to know whether writers here get much work via their sites or whether their sites are more marketing tools etc. And, if you do get work via the site, is it mainly from clients in your local area or international?

That's great to hear Leanne. Much as there are some very good sites around for copywriters, I wondered how much value they actually were to the provider. So, thanks for the impetus to get off my you know what!

Building a website has NEVER BEEN easier.

Just don't throw a bunch of money into ANY site where you can't control your HTML code. It's very important for you to learn a small amount about coding if you really want to earn from your site!

It is possible to build a website for nuthing and get it hosted for the same amount. I know whereof I speak. My website: http://www.eccentrix.com/members/johnhalllast
is a frebee. I also wrote the code using a number of free HTML editors over the years. The one I use at the moment is Pagebreeze.

First rule: Build your home page first and then write links from the home page to the other pages. Make sure each page has a link back to the home page.

Second rule: Make it simple. If it's so smart that you're the only one who knows how to use it, then you have a disaster.

Third rule: The aim is to have enough changing information that the user keeps coming back.

Fourth rule: "Try for brevity, then wit. " Say what you are going to say, then shut the ---- up.

I'd been depending on run-off from the site of the designers I work with before I got my own late last year.

Just wondering if anyone here has used the googleads facility and whether they feel the cost is worthwhile?

I meant to add what really sold me on having a site was hearing from a design agency I do some work for up in Sydney that the majority of their work comes via the internet! Wow. I find that mind-blowing. I could understand, say, 30% but *most* is quite outstanding - and surprising to me.

Yea... It is definitely important to have a website representative of your business - no matter how big or small. It is your little piece of presence on the information highway.

If and when your website becomes popular, it also becomes an automatic lead generation machine... pretty good stuff.

But the growth will be flat for quite a while, until you have invested enough content and effort to make your website "visible" in the huge expanse of the internet.
